Constant Craving: Curry

By Opal Tribble • Oct 29th, 2007 • Category: The Cooked, Vegan, Vegetarian, What's Cooking/Uncooking?

Curry PowderBesides the fact that I love that song by K.D. Lang the past few days it seems that I’ve been constantly craving curries. Today at The Raw & The Cooked I’ll be making a vegan curry.

What I love about curries is that there are numerous ways you can prepare them. Pete of My GPS Camera Phone asked me if I made curries when he visited my website Vegan Momma. The answer is I do.

Currently the rice and garbanzo beans are soaking. Why the rice? My daughter has been on a brown rice kick recently so I’ve been adding that to our meals. I’ll be adding fresh vegetables to the curried dish and you even might see me sneak some dried fruit in there also (raisins.)

Several years ago I had curried vegetables (Jamaican) that had raisins. It was delicious. I’ll be taking photos of the dish, before I serve it, and I’ll be sure to post the photos here at The Raw & The Cooked.

The foods that I eat are mainly raw but occasionally cooked dishes make their way onto our plate. I’ll be making a raw fruit smoothie. I’ve put bananas in the freezer and will add them to some delicious smoothie later today. It’s still up in there air what type of fruit smoothie I’ll make but it will be delicious. I’ll also be tossing greens into the mix. It’s a delicious way to add vegetables to your meals.

  1. Look forward to your recipes. I love curry too but I think you know that. I think I love cameras more but if you put a bowl of curry in front of me I might wave off taking photos of bugs. ;) No, wait, I will just take my bowl out with me.

  2. You are so awesome. I cannot wait to see what comes of this. Now I really have a curry craving! I’ll have to try yours when it’s posted. Thank you!

  3. Please everyone don’t hate me but I really have never liked the spice curry. I also don’t like cloves. Does a curry mean that it necessarily has the spice curry in it? According to the wikipedia entry it doesn’t seem to indicate that. So I may actually like a curry dish if it doesn’t have that spice in it. I think I like most of the other ingredients. Maybe I’m just weird. Well, that is true anyway, but I meant specifically about the curry. :???: Yes, I was up too late last night again.

  4. LOL. I just read Beth’s comment so now at least I know I’m not the only weird one out tonight.

  5. Teeni, curry is a blend of spices and so it doesn’t have to have clove in it. You can make your own curry. Maybe Opal has a nice recipe of curry that doesn’t have cloves. I have never made it myself from scratch but I have been getting whole seed to do something like that. :)

  6. I haven’t had a good curry in ages. ..

  7. Also a fan of curry and looking forward to your follow up post! I also love how there are a million and one ways to make curry, and honestly, I never thought of using raisins - that is brilliant and I will be sure to try that in my next batch!

  8. Thanks, Beth Ellen! I’m glad I came back to check the responses. I didn’t realize it was a blend of spices!

  9. Beth,
    You’re too funny!

    pete,
It’s been busy I should have something up in a few days.

    teeni,
I make my own curry powder but I also use curry leaf. :-) If everyone liked the same thing life would be very boring.

    DragonLady,
A good curry is hard to find, lol.

    Ayurveda,
The raisins gave it a wonderful taste. :-)

  10. Does curry leaf taste the same as curry powder? It amazes me how sometimes the different parts of plants taste totally different.

  11. Hnm, I don’t think it does. I love curry leaf. I have added it to the curry powders I make.

  12. Mmmm… Curries are lovely. I’ve been working my way through a book called something like “50 great curry recipes”, and especially like the aubergine curry, and lamb with cardomon.

Do you know if it’s possible to cook an entire curry dish in a rice cooker? As in chuck the meat, spices, vegetables and rice into the machine, and turn it on? I cook a lot in the office and all we have is a rice cooker and microwave over.

  13. I am just amazed at how you just throw these great dishes together. I am a slave to the recipe cards in our house. You definitely have a gift for creating food.

  14. It would be fabulous to have a list of every succesful curry recipy from every south asian cuisines, as they are those who first invented it. How much time would it take to try them all? But until then I am so dying to try your recipy.
